Pregnancy Leads to Lasting Changes in Foot Shape and Size
Scientific researchers investigated the effect of pregnancy on women’s feet, and concluded that feet are subject to irreversible changes in shape and size. Specifically, foot size and width increased often between ½ and 1 whole shoe size, and foot arches collapsed. The changes observed where permanent and do not reverse after pregnancy; and can worsen with further pregnancies.
Increases in foot size lead to discomfort as shoes no longer fit properly.
Reduced arch height effects posture often leading to pain in the ankles, knees, hips and back.
The changes are the result of pregnancy hormone called relaxin which is released from Week 7 and loosens ligaments and tendons to make your pelvis flexible for a more comfortable birth. But this hormone affects the whole body especially your feet. That is why it is so important to look after your feet during pregnancy.
